Welcome to my home page! I'm professor Kevin Ferns and I teach English composition, English literature, and creative writing classes at Woodland Community College, both online and face-to-face. I started teaching at WCC in 2005 after a brief career in book publishing and proposal writing and marketing. I'm also the Vice-President (WCC) of our faculty association and chief negotiator on the FAYCCD negotiation team. I'm proud to serve as the faculty advisor for our campus literary arts magazine, Ink, A Literary Arts Magazine.
You can expect clear guidance, practical feedback, and assignments that connect academic skills to meaningful questions and real-world situations. In composition and literature courses, we examine how language, evidence, and perspective shape the way people understand the world. In creative writing, students develop their individual voices while learning the techniques used in poetry, fiction, drama, and other genres. I believe students improve most when they are challenged, supported, and given opportunities to revise. My goal is to create a classroom where students can ask questions, take intellectual and creative risks, and produce work they are proud of.
When I'm not in the classroom with my students, I like to spend time with my partner, four kids, and labradoodle camping at the beach or in the mountains, kayaking, hiking, golfing, or exploring new places. I'm also a soccer coach, avid runner, and overly optimistic lifetime fanatic of the Sacramento Kings.
