Manuel Fernando Rios is a West Sacramento, CA based artist, curator, Yolo Arts board member and is a Professor of Art at Woodland Community College in Woodland, CA. Rios earned his BA and MA in Studio Art from California State University, Sacramento and was awarded with the Headlands Center for the Arts Graduate Fellowship. He then received his MFA with an emphasis on Painting from the University of California, Davis. Rios’ work is included in permanent collections at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library at San Jose State University, Sacramento City College and American River College in Sacramento, CA. Manuel has shown in such venues as the Museum of the African Diaspora (M.o.A.D.), San Francisco, CA and the Museum of Culture and the Environment, Central Washington University, Ellensburg, WA. Rios’ artwork explores the complexities of understanding identity. The imagery often includes figurative subjects juxtaposed next to colorful geometric shapes which careen in and out throughout the picture plane creating a sense of discombobulation and confusion. The interaction between the figures is the result of Rios’ exploration of ethnicity and self-identifying culture.
