Dena Martin has spent over half of her life working in libraries. Martin has experience in school libraries, public libraries, and academic libraries. Martin started working as a student assistant at Sacramento City College Library's Instructional Media Center immediately after high school, worked for an Associate's Degree in Library Technology at Sacramento City College, received a position as a Library Media Technical Assistant at Sacramento City College where she continued to work while earning a Bachelor's Degree in Social Science from Sacramento State University and then a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from San Jose State University.
Martin enjoys teaching students research in the classroom and at the reference desk. She believes that finding information is one of the most important skills a student should learn. "We can't teach or encourage students to be lifelong learners without teaching them information literacy". An information literate student can:
* Determine the extent of information needed
* Access the needed information effectively and efficiently
* Evaluate the information and its sources critically
* Incorporate selected information into one's knowledge base
* Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose
* Understand the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information, and access and use information ethically and legally
For more information on information literacy, visit the Association of College and Research Libraries webpage at http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/acrl/standards/informationliteracycompetency.cfm .
During select semesters, the library offers Library Science 1, Beginning Research, to introduce students to information literacy skills. Students who have taken the class feel more comfortable and efficient finding information online and at libraries.
