Students are turning to new sources of “help” in writing essays, among them chatbots based on a Large Language Model (LLM) that generates text. These new “tools”—such as ChatGPT, EssayAiLab, Perplexity, and Grammarly— can hinder student learning rather than help it. On the other hand, AI tools can be a great asset to student learning as well. This workshop explores the value of traditional tutoring in contrast to the assistance rendered by AI in reading and writing.
